On a lovely July evening, 39 ULLRs met to enjoy good friends and wonderful music by the Minnesota Orchestra. It was our annual Sommerfest outing and the theme for that night was The Magnificent Mozart--and magnificent the music was! We started out in Peavey Plaza with wine, beer, burgers and brats. It was a warm evening but comfortable and with the help of early arrivers Bob Higgins and Denny Boxrud, we managed to find a shady spot and position enough tables there. With the Orchestra Hall and Peavey Plaza remodeling plans for next year, who knows what will occur in 2012. We certainly have enjoyed the ambience of the Plaza.
As always, the music was MAGNIFICENT (think I said that before, didn't I!). We had great seats front and center (thank you Chris and Laura in the subscription office for your help keeping us all together). There were some special selections from two Mozart operas plus a violin selection with a Turkish theme. The Turkish piece featured a marvelous violin solo which had the sold-out audience on their feet. In addition, there were thrilling solos by an Australian soprano and, of course, the selections from The Magic Flute are always crowd favorites.
After the concert a dozen or so of the group met at Brit's Pub for desserts and libations. We weren't able to get seats all together but did manage to have everyone sitting with some of our ULLR group. And so, another evening of Sommerfest came to a close. We all had a MAGNIFICENT time listening to the MAGNIFICENT Mozart!
