Ski Copper Colorado
Some people talk about warm weather paradise - WELL, 34 of us had winter paradise in Copper Mountain, Colorado from 02/24/08 to 03/02/08. 11” of snow the first day and 6” the next, and just a few flurries the next few days. It was a little hard skiing the first day, but the next five days was like you would imagine skiing in heaven. Dick Brown’s suitcase and Dave Walberg’s skis did not arrive with us in Denver, but they were delivered the following day, so it all worked out. We had a great pizza party at Tucker’s Tavern. The pizzas were excellent and hot right out of the oven.
Patty Fitzgerald and John Stiefel, on their driving tour of the West, joined us at the end of the week, Joan Roe’s daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren came from Denver and skied with Joan one day. Susan and Don Casey went into Frisco shopping one day and there was an accident on I-70 and no traffic was going through back to Copper. They almost had to spend the night in Frisco, but later the highway was opened and they found a Good Samaritan that gave them a ride back to Copper.
One thing that was appreciated by all was our “Beeline Lift Tickets”. We had our own line to get on the lifts - NO WAITING. They were just scanned and away we went! With the heavy crowds on Friday and Saturday, they were wonderful.
We had a Progressive Last Day Leftovers Party on Saturday night using 3 condos - one for appetizers and drinks, the second for the main course, and the third for desserts. One of the flyers announcing the plan that was to go to the main course condo went to a condo across the hall. Anyhow, they figured it went to our condo and put a note on the bottom advising they would like to donate their leftover food to our cause. Well, we got frozen chicken breasts that we fried, celery and dip, booze, beer, chips, nuts, sausage, eggs, bread, etc. etc. With this plus the leftovers from the ULLR condos, we certainly did have a feast and loads of fun.
Sunday morning our bus ride to the Denver Airport was most interesting. It was snowing and quite foggy. Our bus driver decided not to go through the Eisenhower Tunnel where he would have had to “chain up”, so he made a detour over Loveland Pass. We also detoured on US 6 along Clear Creek to avoid an accident closed I-70. The scenery was beautiful with creek and the snow on the trees and hillsides. We saw one bus stuck, and a few cars off the road. It took us 3 hours from Copper to the airport, but our driver did an excellent job and we all felt quite safe in his hands. We had allowed extra time for the weather so made our plane OK.
We had a great trip, loads of skiing, and camaraderie. Looking forward to skiing next year!
